Smartphones Now
Under Attack

You've probably heard enough warnings from security experts like Trend Micro to know that you should think twice before clicking on a suspicious-looking link in an email message. But what would you do if you got a text message on your phone asking you to call an unfamiliar phone number?

Hackers have developed a knew technique called "smishing"—basically, phishing over smartphones—that takes advantage of the relative scarcity of security threats over the phone to lure users into giving up valuable personal information.

Scammers might send a clickable link to smartphones that have the capability to go directly to a linked destination from a text, or they might just send a request to call a phone number. When the unsuspecting user calls, they are prompted to supply account numbers, Social Security numbers, or other information, which is duly recorded by the hacker for later use.

And if that weren't bad enough, we recently discovered what appears to be a botnet for mobile phones using newer versions of the Symbian OS. If downloaded, the malware steals the user's subscriber, phone and network information, and sends spammed SMS messages to the user's contacts. Fortunately, this problem has already been detected by Trend Micro's Smart Protection Network.
