![]() Travel Safety for Your Laptop If you're traveling for business this summer, you're almost certainly taking your laptop with you. And even if you're traveling for pleasurewell, who can go for days without access to email or their computer's built-in DVD player? No wonder the laptop bag has become almost as ubiquitous a sight in airport security lines as rolling suitcases or sneakers in bins. Just make sure you don't lose your computer at the airport. A survey conducted last year showed that business travelers were most likely to lose their laptops in the security line or at the gateplaces where people tend to be stressed out, in a hurry, and distracted. For these reasons, one of the best things you can do is just give yourself plenty of time at the airport. Don't over pack and you won't be overwhelmed with items to juggle in the security line. And try to ensure that you're going through the metal detector while your laptop is going through the security scanner so that it's out of your sight for only a minimum amount of time. To keep the information on your laptop secure, store all of your important files encrypted and backed up on a separate device. And if you're dealing with really sensitive corporate data, you might want to keep it on your corporate network instead of on your hard drive. The Association of Corporate Travel Executives warned last year that, in light of a Ninth Circuit Court ruling, laptops may be subject to search by customs agents at U.S. borders even if the agents don't have "reasonable cause". A number of privacy groups complained, but until the government sets more specific parameters and guidelines, the basic rule is the customs officials can search your computer and any other electronic devices for any reason. If you want to protect your personal information or make sure confidential corporate data stays confidential, best to travel without it. |
