Getting a Smart, Secure Start to College

If you've got a teenager headed off to college, chances are they already know plenty about protecting their online identity. For example, they probably don't need to be reminded that whatever they put on their Facebook or MySpace pages is as viewable by future employers as it is by future friends. Still, parents can play an important role in ensuring that members of the Facebook generation have everything they need to keep their computer virus-free and less vulnerable to attack.

First off, that new computer will need basic antispam and antispyware software. And if the student plans on working remotely—in libraries, coffee shops, or other public places—features like Wi-Fi hotspot validation and remote file lock can really come in handy. Trend Micro Internet Security Pro provides all those capabilities and more.

Many colleges are now cracking down on peer-to-peer and file-sharing networks, due to both bandwidth concerns and the possible threat of lawsuits from the makers of copyrighted materials. It means that more students have to go back to paying for their music and movies instead of downloading them for free—but on the bright side, it's the better choice legally, ethically, and in terms of safety. Many of those peer-to-peer networks are crawling with corrupted files, viruses, and spyware that can ruin a new hard drive before anybody realizes it's too late.
