Protecting Your Child's Social Network from Cybercreeps

Every day millions of users keep up with friends, extend their networks and share photos on social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace. But what happens when our children and their friends join and become active in the very same social networking sites? They become vulnerable simply because many children don't realize that any "not so nice" person with Internet access, anywhere in the world, can view their Facebook or MySpace pages and then use your child's innocently posted information against them.

One of the most practical ways to protect your kids online is by using privacy settings to restrict who can access and post on your child's page. Both Facebook and MySpace have settings to limit the information that is shared with others. Show your child how to use these settings to limit who can view their profile, and explain to them why this is important. Here's some information on how to change the preferences on Facebook and MySpace:

Facebook
1. After logging in, click Settings on top right and then, Privacy.
2. Restrict who can view your Profile.
3. Restrict information that can be viewed through Search.
4. Restrict who can view your Photos under Profile > Edit Photo Albums Privacy Settings.

MySpace
1. After logging into MySpace, click Account Settings.
2. In the Account Settings section, click Privacy.
3. Restrict your profile to "friends only".
4. Restrict your photos to "friends only".

Another way to protect your family from cyber-creeps and other nasty stuff is by installing an Internet Security software. Trend Micro offers Internet Security software with parental controls that allow you to:

  • Block websites with inappropriate content based on specific categories
  • Choose when and for how long your children are allowed to go online
  • Monitor online activity reports to fine-tune your controls if necessary
