Cyber Attack Knocks Out Government and Business Websites
A botnet of more than 100,000 infected computers launched a massive distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack over the July 4th weekend, taking down government, business, and bank websites around the globe. Those knocked offline included U.S. Departments of Treasury and Transportation, U.S. Federal Trade Commission, and U.S. Secret Service websites. South Korea also took a big hit, igniting speculation that North Korea launched the attacks. However, sites in Japan, Canada, Australia, the Philippines, New Zealand, the U.K., and Vietnam were also attacked. Evidence now points to a botnet controller in Britain.

Microsoft Warns of Six New Vulnerabilities in Two Weeks
In just the first two weeks of July, Microsoft released six new security bulletins—proving summer is never a vacation from malware. One of the most alarming is a zero-day threat that exploits a vulnerability in Microsoft Video ActiveX Control, enabling remote attackers to take complete control of an infected PC. When first discovered, the malware had already inserted in nearly a thousand Chinese websites. Trend Micro™ OfficeScan™ and InterScan™ Web Security customers are already protected by in-the-cloud web reputation. OfficeScan and Microsoft updates are also advised.
