Gartner Warns Against Data Theft and Insider Leaks
Analysts say it's more critical than ever to protect customer data and intellectual property from the growing volume of threats—whether it's data-stealing malware, hackers, accidental loss, or malicious insider leaks. As a solution, Gartner analyst Paul Proctor recommends Data Loss Prevention (DLP) that can identify, track, and secure all confidential data at rest, in use, and in motion. Proctor also discusses ever-changing regulatory requirements and how DLP is essential for compliance.

"Critical Update" Leads to Critical Data Theft
Warning: what appears to be a critical update from Microsoft could be a critical attack designed to steal your confidential data. This new phishing threat arrives as an email that looks every bit like a Microsoft security fix. Even all of the links are legitimate—except for one. An engineer at TrendLabs explains, "The URL where the 'critical update' may be downloaded looks legitimate, but hovering over the hyperlink... reveals a totally different destination." The URL leads to the download of a Trojan (TROJ_ZBOT.BTS).

"Criminal background checks require that we collect driver license numbers. LeakProof shows us exactly where this information is stored on our network, and has made it possible for us to block efforts to email these files, or copy them to USB devices, CDs, or DVDs." -- Thomas Gonzalez, Technology Manager, Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas

"Trend Micro LeakProof allows us to look at the content of data across workflows, not just the source of the data. It does not interfere with people doing their jobs in their own way, but works in the background to protect our sensitive data." -- Tim O'Neill, Assistant Director for Information Technology, Security Industry Authority, UK
